About this role
The Tailings & Water Engineer-in-Training reports to the Lead, Water Resources. This progressive position supports management, operations, governance, and regulatory compliance for tailings and water at Red Dog Mine. Responsibilities include technical, scientific, environmental, geotechnical, surveillance, and reporting activities.
Assist in managing site water resources, including GoldSim water balance maintenance, water management plans, and Teck’s Water Governance adherence. Conduct water quality modeling with PHREEQC and Geochemist Workbench. Assess ARD interception and update water quality mass balances and predictions.
Deploy and troubleshoot monitoring equipment like vibrating wire piezometers, thermistors, turbidity sensors, and water quality monitors. Aggregate and analyze data from instrumentation, groundwater, surface water, and climate in databases. Use spreadsheets with VBA macros for effective data communication.
Red Dog is the largest critical minerals mine in the US and one of the largest zinc mines worldwide. Developed through Teck and NANA partnership, it delivers benefits to the local Iñupiat community. Participate in external engagement, community meetings, and technical discussions.
Provide technical writing for operations documents and review consultant reports. Support continuous improvement and advanced technology initiatives. Develop understanding of company organization while advancing in tailings and water management.
Requirements
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) designation
- Proficiency in GoldSim for operational water balance modeling
- Experience with geochemical modeling tools like PHREEQC and Geochemist Workbench
- Knowledge of tailings storage facility operations and regulatory requirements
- Skills in deploying and maintaining geotechnical instruments such as piezometers and thermistors
- Ability to manage and analyze environmental data in databases and spreadsheets with VBA
- Familiarity with water governance principles and ARD management
Responsibilities
- Protect safety and health by promoting safe procedures per Teck Alaska policy and regulations
- Complete assigned work with measurements, calculations, analysis, interpretation, reporting, and recommendations
- Assist in managing water resources including GoldSim water balance, water management plans, and ARD interception
- Assist in water quality and predictive modeling using PHREEQC and Geochemist Workbench
- Provide technical support for Tailings Storage Facility management, governance, and regulatory compliance
- Deploy and troubleshoot monitoring equipment including vibrating wire piezometers, thermistors, and turbidity sensors
- Aggregate, organize, manage, and analyze data from instrumentation, groundwater, and pumping rates
- Prepare presentation materials for external engagement including community meetings and agency visits
