About this role
Under the close supervision of a supervisory official in an Environmental Engineering Program at the Department of Environmental Protection, learns to conduct routine surveys, studies, inspections, and investigations relating to environmental conditions. Learns to review engineering plans and gather data for enforcement of environmental laws and regulations. Performs other related duties as required.
In the Bureau of Flood Hazard and Stormwater Engineering, reviews and processes flood hazard area permit applications including hydrologic and hydraulic calculations for floodplain delineations. Handles stormwater management, green infrastructure, bridge, and culvert construction or reconstruction. Provides technical assistance to freshwater wetlands and coastal permit applications.
Works within Watershed & Land Management, Land Resource Protection at 501 East State Street, Trenton, NJ. Regulates new construction and redevelopment through Flood Hazard Area Control Act Rules and Stormwater Management Rules. Collaborates in a state agency focused on environmental protection.
Develops skills to examine engineering designs, site plans, grading and drainage plans, and flood maps after training. Gains ability to perform simple hydrologic and hydraulic calculations and analyze engineering problems. Learns to interpret DEP laws, rules, regulations, and codes relevant to program areas.
Requirements
- Ability to examine and analyze engineering designs, site plans, grading and drainage plans, and flood maps
- Ability to review and analyze engineering reports and environmental impact statements
- Knowledge and ability to perform simple hydrologic and hydraulic engineering calculations
- Ability to analyze engineering problems
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply knowledge of DEP laws, rules, regulations, and codes after training
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental, Ocean, Coastal, Bio-Resource, Biomedical, Sanitary, Industrial, Agricultural, or Mining Engineering, or related field
- Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification may substitute for education requirement with proof and Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam results in relevant discipline
Responsibilities
